These tips are purposely meant for the peak season or summer season; however some can be applied to non-peak season when visiting Greece. A knowledgeable traveller will always be ready in any situation that can arise from travel.
Rule number one; know your transportations ahead of time. Book train passes, ferryboat ticket and airplane ticket in advance. Greece is not just a tourist destination but a very busy place a as well. Expect that trains or ferries can be crowded so step up and get your ticket in advance. Especially in the months of July and August, Greece is the busiest within these months. Make sure that you get your plane ticket and train passes in advance. Majority of international tourists will most likely book flights in Athens. Athens is very well linked to all parts of the country and you can choose different modes of transportation available like the planes, trains, ferries, and buses.
Most of the tourists choose train travel when going to Greece. Rail passes can be availed as early as 3 months before your travel period. Make sure you get your passes in advance. Do the same if you plan on taking the ferry. Get yourself tickets online. There are routes that sold out in advance.
Second, pack the appropriate clothes. Greece may not be as fashion forward compared to Italy and France, but don’t just walk everywhere with your fit flops. When going to dinner and attractions places like live dinner show, throw in some walking shoes/ night out shoes, good jeans, and descent looking top.
Now if you want to visit churches or monasteries, remember that shoulders and knees should be covered. If you opt for sleeveless dresses, throw in a cardigan. On the safe side, bring your leggings too.
Third, you are going to a summer vacation then definitely anticipate that it’s hot. The weather in Greece is also unpredictable but expect Summer to be HOT. The temperature in Greece is rising over the past years; an example of that is forest fire that is happening. Bring your sun screens, recommended is 30 and up SPF. Wear sun screen everywhere in the beach, in the tour, or just plain strolling. Hydrate yourself always. Never forget to bring your water.
Fourth, always search in advance. Familiarize yourself with the attraction places you will go to. Know when the attraction site is close. A lot of museums in Athens have their own website and they have listing on when they are close and when is sale as well. It’s always a good thing to research.
Fifth, you will be going to a foreign country. Of course, know their language even a little bit. Familiarize yourself and learn common or frequently used phrases. Although, Greeks can understand and speak in English; however it will still be a good way to answer back in their language.
Have a fun adventure in your summer Greece getaway!
